How to make a Day of the Dead ofrenda for your pet

An ofrenda for pets can be a small, personal space for remembering an animal you loved. Begin with their photograph and an object that still feels like theirs. More decorations are not a measure of more love.

Start with a photograph and water

Choose a photo you enjoy seeing and place a clean water bowl beside it. Add a collar, a fabric toy or a written memory. If you use food, keep it out of reach of living animals and remove it before it spoils.

Flowers and a safe light

Cempasúchil can frame the space or form a short trail of petals. A flameless candle gives a warm light without an exposed flame. Secure the display so a curious pet or child cannot pull it down.

Leave space for your own custom

Families differ in what they include and when they set up their ofrenda. You can mark October 27, include your pet in November remembrances, or choose a date that matters to you. A video can sit alongside a photograph; it does not replace your memories.

Questions

Does an ofrenda for a pet need to be large?

No. A photograph, a bowl of water and one familiar object such as a collar or toy can be enough.

When should I set up a pet ofrenda?

Many families set it up before October 27, the day often dedicated to pets, or include their companion in the family ofrenda on November 1 and 2. Any date that matters to you is fine.

Is it safe to use candles and marigolds around pets?

Use enclosed, flameless candles and keep flowers, food and cords out of reach of living pets. Secure the display so it cannot be pulled down.
